  9. topic of this article, I'll consider a
  10. certain  question:   I  want  to write
  11. about the lack of multichannel modules
  12. in  the  Eurochart.   This  is  a very
  13. narrow  topic,  so  many  of you might
  14. doubt  the  sense in making an article
  15. like  this  for  a  diskmag.   Maybe I
  16. should  simply  send  an e-mail to the
  17. maineditor  of  Eurochart  -  Darkhawk
  18. that  is-  and present my arguments to
  19. him?   No.   I've felt that this topic
  20. is   quite  linked  to  some  negative
  21. scene-things,  and  an  article  about
  22. this   can  be  interesting  for  some
  23. people.     Perhaps   I   might   open
  24. somebody's  eyes  to  certain matters?
  25. Or maybe not?

  28. diskmagazine?   Graphics?   Well,  the
  29. title  picture  must  be quite good, a
  30. clear  panel  will  make  the  reading
  31. easy,  and  extra  cliparts  would  be
  32. nice.   But  no - graphics are not the
  33. most  important  thing.   Music?  Huh,
  34. cool  scene tunes are needed!  They're
  35. building  atmosphere  and  put us in a
  36. pleasant   mood.    But  again  -  you
  37. know...   Perhaps  code?  Yes, code is
  38. important,  but not the most important
  39. thing.

  41. »CL1:So,  what  should diskmag makers drive
  42. at?   Of  course  the  magazine should
  43. open  on  the computer of each scener.
  44. Is   it   difficult?   Certainly  not!
  45. Everybody in the scene are PPC owners?
  46. No,   the   majority   still  use  old
  47. Motorola's,  so  the mag should be for
  48. those  cards.   Graphic cards are also
  49. not  available  inside  the  Amigas of
  50. many sceners, AGA is the standard, and
  51. its  not  possible  to  develop  it by
  52. software.   Besides - the AGA chipset,
  53. ceaselessly criticized by Amiga users,
  54. is  not  so  bad,  and  it can display
  55. 24-bit   graphics   sufficiently  good
  56. (jpg's  &  png's in low resolution and
  57. ofcourse  24-bit  iff's  - perfect for
  58. scene  gfx).   What  about  the music?
  59. Well,  Paula's  four  channels are not
  60. impressive    any    more   :).    But
  61. programmers   have  developed  them  -
  62. bigger   quantities  of  channels  are
  63. mixed  on  those  four channels by the
  64. processor,  so it's possible to listen
  65. to and to compose multichannel modules
  66. on  your  Amiga.  Martin Blom's AHI is
  67. now the standard.  The great tracker -
  68. DIGI   Booster   Pro   by  Tomasz  and
  69. Waldemar Piasta - makes use of it.  So
  70. each  diskmag  should  run on machines
  71. with  this equipment:  about 4 MB RAM,
  72. AGA   chipset,   680x0  card  and  AHI
  73. installed.     Logical?     Not    for
  74. everybody.

  76. »CL0:The  Eurochart,  which for a long time
  77. has  been  the  most  popular diskmag,
  78. discriminates   those  musicians,  who
  79. resign  the  old  Protracker  for  the
  80. incomparably  better  DBPro.  Why do I
  81. think   so?    That's   simple  -  the
  82. magazine don't support AHI.  Why?  The
  83. most  logical  explanation  will be my
  84. own  sentence from this article:  "the
  85. magazine  should  open on the computer
  86. of each scener".  But the real scener,
  87. not  common  lamer.  AHI will not work
  88. on  020 (well, maybe if mixing rate is
  89. around 5 kHz?...  :), on 030 I suppose
  90. that using a few channels is the upper
  91. border  of normal quality.  But on 040
  92. everything   works   fine!    If   the
  93. musician  want to compose a 32-channel
  94. module with 16-bit samples and DSP, he
  95. should  know that 060 will be minimum.
  96. But  it's possible to evade this - not
  97. many   sceners   possess  sound  cards
  98. (including  me  unfortunately), so you
  99. can  convert  the  samples  into 8-bit
  100. quality  instead.   You  will not feel
  101. the difference on Paula.

  103. »CL1:Can  someone  seriously  interested in
  104. the Amiga-scene have only 030?  Never!
  105. Firstly  -  we  should not treat those
  106. people  seriously,  secondly  -  for a
  107. long  time,  demos  have not been made
  108. for that specification (they will run,
  109. but you know what will happen), so why
  110. make  a diskmag for it?  But maybe the
  111. Eurochart Staff thinks that if someone
  112. can't  watch the demo, he can at least
  113. read    about    it?     Silly   talk.
  114. Personally   I  own  a  68040/40  with
  115. co-processor, and I can't say that I'm
  116. very proud of this.  I think that this
  117. is  an  absolute minimum, and slowly I
  118. must  start  looking for a job to earn
  119. some money for something better :).

  123. not  do this.  But then again - why do

  125. one  4chn module to the Eurochart, but

  137. this   is   a   little   remix  of  my
  138. ten-channel DBM, and converting it was
  139. boring  and tiresome.  The Eurochart -
  140. through lack of AHI support - isolates
  141. itself  from some quantity of support.
  142. Magazines can be initiators of changes
  143. in  the  scene  - a smaller demand for
  144. four-channel,   a  smaller  number  of
  145. Protracker  modules.   That would then
  146. mean  a bigger quantity of DBPro tunes
  147. (well, at least I hope so).  But it is
  148. not  difficult  to  see that there are
  149. less  four-channel modules.  Just take
  150. a  look  at the diskmags (not only the
  151. Eurochart)  -  these  are old modules!
  152. What's  up?   Lack  of  4chn  modules?
  153. Just support AHI!

  155. »CL1:Look   at   Polish   magazines.   They
  156. support  the  AHI  package  for a long
  157. time.   Therefore  it  was possible to
  158. listen  to  the  great  "Living In The
  159. Past" by JazzCat in Taboo #2, "Looking
  160. For Changes" by Maxym in Taboo #3, and
  161. "Cos o czym sie nie mowi" by Grogon in
  162. Taboo  #4.   In  the  last  two years,
  163. there has been no impressive module in
  164. a  diskmag  relased outside of Poland.
  165. Tunes  were  just  O.K.  Not really an
  166. enthusiastic approval for musicians.

  170. published in the Eurochart right away.
  171. But  firstly:  chances will be bigger;
  172. secondly:    The  Eurochart  can  then
  173. receive  more  music  support.  And at
  174. last,   thirdly:    it   will   be  an
  175. opportunity   for   each  musician  to
  176. present  his music as he himself wants
  177. it.   I  think that's the point, isn't
  178. it?   If  the  possibility to open the
  179. mag on 020 and 030 is so important for
  180. the  Eurochart  staff  (I think that's
  181. absurd), they should do something with
  182. a  magazine  prefs  file or something,
  183. where each user can set AHI support to
  184. ON/OFF.  For those "AHI OFF 'sceners'"
  185. the   EC   Staff   can   put   in  one
  186. four-channel tune, while the rest will
  187. be   played   by   AHI.   This  is  my
  188. proposal.  And my request.  The choice
  189. is yours.
